I have been dealing with this for years and had no idea it was a phobia. I'm always being laughed at if I see it and start gagging. I always remember when it happened. If I try to tell somebody what happened, I start gagging again. It really sucks but I'm glad I'm not alone

Thank you all who responded. I am glad to know I am not the only one. I do have a counselor i speak with and mostly phone sessions since I have been having so much anxiety that I have not made it to see her in person for awhile. I don't have to worry about being spit on either lol.

Major Spit phobia!!
by: Anonymous

Hi all,
I am soo phobic of spit to the point it takes over my life. I consistently obsess and question every time I feel a sensation on my face etc.. I know mostly it is my anxiety but I have gotten spit on too easily. I too can relate and hate when people spit on the ground or right in front of you. Mostly it's guys that do that but sometimes girls.. I am sick of getting spat on soo easily. If it's not by my teacher, its by my counselor, or a friend, or a family member. The worst and I am mainly just affected if a stranger spits on me. I was sitting with my bf at a bar and people next to us that were paying.. Gross I was watching TV and the lady spit on me... Gave me such horrible anxiety.. I too feel the only way around it is to not think about it. But because of all my recent encounters id rather look funny and cover my mouth half the time then get spat on my mouth face, etc.. I actually feel violated when a stranger spits on my face. Later on I will obsess and obsess and think what I could have done differently. Remember around the time, place, and exact date it happened to me. It is terrible!! I am just getting sick of people who have no respect and spat right in front of you.. I try not to make conversation with strangers as I have the worst luck with spit and being spat on my face. I too do not care to see my own spit.. Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have saliva? Ugh! I have felt sick to my stomach and almost vomitted too because I thought someone spat on my face! It's soo bad that it triggers my panic attacks... GROSS!

Can't stand spit
by: Nancy

It's very annoying as, like most phobias, a trigger really can appear out of nowhere and when you least expect it.
I gag when I brush my teeth and if I see spit in someone's mouth or evidence of it anywhere.
When I lived in Brooklyn some !?*$$ole used to hock up EVERY SINGLE DAY right outside my window. He had no idea of the distress this was causing me. I wish people were more sensitive to this phobia and would stop spitting in public and leaving gobs of spit in the street. If I see spit in the road, I have to spend the next 20 minutes trying not to be sick. I could be watching someone talk on TV or in person and suddenly their mouths are full of spit and I'm retching and trying desperately not to throw up. I know my reaction is not rational but I will insist that it is a disgusting habit that only the muckiest of people seem to have trouble controlling.

To my knowledge, I have no other phobias.
I have also never been treated for this phobia. To the person who asked what this phobia is called - I believe it's grouped in with "vomitophobia". I personally think these two phobias are separate in nature but have a common origin perhaps. They are both probably derived from a fear of disease. I am keen on cleanliness but I am not phobic/obsessive about it by any standard.
And another side-note to someone else's comment - baby drool, strangely, doesn't bother me. And I don't have children.

Hope this is helpful to somebody. The only way I have to deal with this is to force myself to think of something else and take time to calm down.

I know how you feel
