DEATH TO PENNIES!!!!!!!
Gross by: Anonymous
I don't like seeing pennies on the floor or on the counter and I hate seeing coins in the cup holder of someone's car. I refuse to put my drink on top of them. I hate all coins but I managed to deal with quarters. But pennies freak me the hell out. I thought I was the only one with this problem. I hate having the feeling of loose change in my pockets too. It makes me feel dirty.

so good to find comapany by: Anonymous
For pretty much as long as I remember I have hated coins, particularly those below 50p, I am 15 and my family think I'm doing it for attention, my brother will put pennies in my room which makes me feel sick and I have to clean the room. Memories which may have triggered the phobia could be my brother putting coppers in his mouth (still makes me shudder) and my dad putting coins in ketchup to 'clean' them. Like many others here I will ask cashiers to keep the change or put it in the charity box which is why I prefer to use my debit card. I even hated the plastic coins we used when learning to count money in primary school. If I have coins in my hand I feel my palms goping sweaty and wash them as soon as I can.I have to use another object to move them out of the way when I see them around the house because they make me feel sick. I also HATE the jingly sound in pockets and the smell left on my hands.I'm so glad I found somewhere to read about other peoples experiences..
Thank you! by: Bailey
I HATE COINS! i refuse touch them or smell them or hold them. it disgusts me when people eat coins or metal. i hate the jean buttons too.. my grandma used to tell e how if you find a penny on the road it's good luck and i was so afraid i would almost cry. even in the car, my parents put coins in the cup holders. i won't even set my cup on top of that, although the coins won't touch the drink. THEY DISGUST ME. I hate them and i hate when my friends and family touch them. i also hate my parents wedding rings. they will be holding a pill in their hand (on their ring) and i will throw it out and get a new one. It's unhealthy to a point where i will tell a cashier to keep the change or i will slide the coins off with a sleeve and hide them. i also hate things metal-ly. in science we were doing a metals lab and we needed to use a penny to test the hardness and i got in trouble and a C on it because i refused to touch it. i mean you can't blame me right? I AM THANKFUL I FOUND THIS PAGE BECAUSE no one gets it. my family and friends are like "what's wrong with coins?" and every time i say EVERYTHING!
THANK YOU!! by: Bailey
So everyone thought i was a little weird because I HATE COINS! when i go to the store, i make sure i have a friend to grab the coins and take them. they're gross, smelly, green and much more nastiness!! i even hate metal like spoons and forks that are metal, it just grosses me out! i dont knoww why i started this habit, but it's so gross! any metal like keys gross me out too!
so gross by: Anonymous
I am so scared of coins, especally pennies. I think they are gross. I have been chased around the house numerous times by someone holding a coin. Whenever I get change back I always have my friend take the coins or purposly drop them on the floor and leave them there.
COINS = Eeew by: Anonymous
Hi I am from Thailand. You are not alone! I am just 12 years old and I am really scared of coins. I don;t know why, but I'm scared since 2 years old. Whenever I saw coins on the floor, or on the bed, desk, anywhere (at home) I will ask my parents to keep it in the wallet. Coins are eww, dirty, smelly, there's no word to describe it. Especially when coins are wet, I'm going to walk away. :(
Filthy by: Kaley W. Iowa.
I am 20 and have had this problem since I was 9. I remember putting coins in a giant piggy bank at my gma's house up until that age. I'm not sure what changed but she was an alcoholic and I wasn't allowed to see her anymore. Maybe that was it. Anyway, I DESPISE coins. They're crawling with germs and make your hands smell. I hate looking at them, I can't think of anything else when they are around me. Some metals bother me too and absolutely NO ONE is allowed to borrow my earrings as they are tainted with nastiness if someone else wears them. I also have to drive my car with a steering wheel cover otherwise I can feel the germs crawling on me. I am mostly afraid of coins though. I can't stand the thought of warm keys either. If I am shopping I tell the clerk to keep the change or I unzip my wallet and make them put it in. Once my friend Kitty put a penny in her mouth in middle school and I almost threw up. I am the only person I know with this problem. If I have to touch them I pull my sleeve over my hand or use a paper towel but even that freaks me out. If someone else touches coins i make them wash there hands or I avoid there hands because then they are tainted. My family, friends, and boyfriend think its ridiculous and funny. I just can't get over it and I don't think I ever will.
I'm not alone :) by: Rei
I watched videos about phobias awhile ago from youtube, some people scared of animals, some scared over things that normal people might think it is stupid or freak to be fear of. Made me realized that I'm not the only one in this world that has weird phobia - phobia of coins. So I googled and glad that I found this site and see that I'm not the only one who suffering from this weird phobia.
Before this, I always think I am weird and it really upset me. Seems like I'm not alone having this phobia. Makes me glad that I'm not the only one that fighting over this weird phobia. People might laugh and say to us, why we must afraid of coins, they wont understand how the feeling. I tried to overcome it, but it seems useless. Until now, I still keep on trying to fix and solve the phobia, but still no luck :(
I'm fine with large coins but I freak out over the small sizes especially the cooper coin. If I see them, I will hold my breath, close my mouth so tight, and I feel weird feeling at the end of my lips. I cant stand to be near around the coins. I remembered I told my family about it, they dont really bother about it, maybe they think I'm just joking around, it really sad. I didnt know how this phobia started but what I can remember is my mom brought a lots of cooper coins when I was like 5 years old and give me to play with. I remembered I'm fine with the coins that time. Well, maybe something happen after that. Maybe someone scared me with those coins and maybe that is how it trigger the phobia.
I'm 24 now and I really hope I can overcome this. Its really stress me out when I think about it. I couldnt bring myself to tell my fiancee about this. I dont think he will understand. But I really hope that I can overcome this before getting married cuz he is the type that likes to mess around his coins everywhere. I visited his family's house and always found those cooper coins like everywhere around the house. If I still cant cope with the phobia, I cant imagine what will happen to me when we go visit his parent's house after getting married. I'm so dead :(

Keep them away! by: Anonymous
Ugh, I hate coins, especially pennies and all the small ones. I have no idea why, I just always have. I feel like I'll throw up whenever I have to handle one, especially pennies with lots of rust and dirt on them. They are DISGUSTING. I have to cover coins up with paper or something whenever I see them. I had no idea other people had this fear! Thank God for the internet.
i have this too! by: Ama
Im so glad to find out others have it too. I hate coins, keys, small metal stuff. No one understands. Ill scream when i see coins on the floor and ill get it removed. I wrap the small change in my receipt and throw it away most of the time. I get really piss when someone give change of lots of coins. I always count the amount of stuff before i pay. Ill add some stuff just to make sure i dont get any coin change back. Or maybe pay by card. My dad thought i was pretending and tht im acting like a rich kid that i couldnt even look at coins. It hurts. :(
You can avoid it. by: Anonymous
The more your run from the problem, the more the problem runs after you.
Being a kid , it's Ok. But as you grow elder and you understand that this is one phobia only. Phobia is just a negative feeling.
Don't convince your mind that you have phobia. It's easy to teach yourself that you are sick. However, it needs a little practice to make yourself understand that you are normal.
You guys are not able to overcome this phobia, as since childhood, you are treating yourself as sick. which is making you more sick. Try to treat yourself as normal. It's not a joke and also I'm understanding your problem.
But try to convince yourself that you're OK . Then repeat itself in your mind that you feel OK to hold or see the coins. Try to visualize in your mind that you are holding a coin and nothing is happening to you. You are rather happy. Once you are able to visualize this happiness , due to feeling of being normal, then try to do it practically. Just think, if you will feel bad, you will leave the coin. Try holding the coin for 2 minutes, then leave. Just feel happy to think that nothing happened to you, as you had thought and now you are confident enough to handle your problems. Repeat it next day for same time. Then next day may be hold the coin for 5 minutes. Each day practice it with gradually increasing the time. Build confidence in yourself that it's just a negative feeling and you are strong enough to handle this. Once you are able to handle for some time, you can handle it forever only.
Just a matter of confidence building and educate yourself right and not wrong. You're normal people and you're not sick, but till date you are treating yourselves as sick.
What really matters? If people do pity on you, thinking you as sick OR if you are happy to know that you are normal.
Yes, you're normal and you can handle it. Have faith in yourself!
All the Best!
I have this! by: Anonymous
I didn't know it had a name or that anyone else felt the same way. Mine is a little different because I hate dimes. With a passion. I hate the size of them--it makes no sense that they are right behind a quarter in value but they are the smallest coin. A friend of mine covered my desk, keyboard and phone with dimes on my birthday. People think I'm weird and that it's funny but I hate them. If I get dimes back as change from a vending machine, I will leave them in the coin return. I have no idea how long I've had this but I'm glad to know it isn't just me!
Copper coins by: Anonymous
Im 15 and ive had the fear of coins less than 20p since i was a baby. I really dont know what caused it to start.
Coppers are the worst. I cant bear the sight of them, knowing they are in the room with me. If they touch, for example, a bag of sweets (not making contact with the sweets) i wouldnt eat them. If it touched my clothes whilst wearing them, i would shower and change. If it touched my skin in a shop, i would either wash my hands as soon as possible or use hand sanitiser. If it was left on a table, i would scream and get someone to move it or move it using paper etc.
Im glad im not the only one who has this phobia.
£2 coin phobia by: Maddie
Not sure if anyone else has this but £2 coins make me sick. Other coins aren't much of a problem but £2s are just intollerable. If I am ever given one as change I insist they swap it or spend it as soon as possible. I can't bare to touch them - which was a problem when I used to work in a shop. My stomach turned every time I was given one and I had to get rid of them all as quickly as possible and wash my hands after touching them. So...is this really, really abnormal to have such a phobia of £2 coins?
My little(ish) rant by: Lenalee
They. Are. Disgusting. Since forever I have never been able to touch them, it used to be a lot worse. At primary school they would give us these fake plastic coins to play with, practice counting money or whatever. And I seriously would NOT touch them! Even if they were plastic. They were these freaky counter things in the common copper and silver colours. I remember in school my peers would stick their lunch money in their mouths and I would end up alone in the corner gagging away. Embarrassing, I know. I can't touch them AT ALL! Or even look at them, when I am eating in the common room at school where it is a COMPLETE tip and people leave change all over the place, I can't eat if there is a penny on the chair opposite me. My friend has to cover it up or chuck it out the window or something! Some of my friends find it really weird and funny, cue the throwing coins at me. One time, my friend put a coin near me and I freaked out, knocked their hand away and strangled her. Well, as much strangling as a tiny 16 year old could strangle. I work at a cafe place and one time, a customer dropped a handful of coppers in my hands when I wasn't paying attention. I just stared at it. Shock. Horror. Disgust. I had to use every inch of my will power not to throw it back at him and scream. I just chucked it under the counter, where the help of a fellow employee, cleaned up. I then proceeded to bleach my hands out back. Coppers are the worst. They are my enemies. Die.
Yucky coins! by: A, Dublin
I hate them too, especially coppers. Its been that way as long as I can remember. I don't like metal in general, I don't wear any jewellery and am not keen on keys or clothing with metal on it, but coins definitely the worst. I can't eat if there are coins in sight and have to get people to remove them for me.
I handle them with my right hand if I have to shop (and wash my hands ASAP after), and only eat snack food with my left. Would you believe, I had to work on a till in a DIY store and had to touch coins all day long? It was horrible, but I managed it. However, that exposure didn't 'cure' my phobia. People have suggested hypnotism, but I don't like coins so why would I want to like them?!
I won't date a guy who wears jewellery and I don't think I could marry someone who proposed to me with a ring as he obviously wouldn't know me well enough!
I manage stainless steel cuttelry with no intricate patterns fine, but can be fussy with some knives and forks.
I would say I have improved over the years, I still hate metal, but it certainly doesn't prevent me from doing anything in my life. I work in a hospital, and thankfully we can wear protective gloves before we touch any metal!
I think the phobia of coins is on the OCD spectrum as a common theme is the dirtiness of coins, and believe me, after a day on the till in the shop, my hands were filthy!
I have this phobia too. by: Anonymous
Every since I was young looking at the pennies which were caked with dirt and rust made my stomach lurch. I can't eat in the same room as them or touch them. If I see one on the counter, I have to move it from the room with a piece of paper. I think my phobia stems from the fact that they are handeled by so many people and no one knows where they are coming from, and the metal aspect makes me feel uneasy and digusted. I always thought that I was the only person fearing coing, but since I have discovered this blog, it makes me feel better to know that i'm not alone.

I have never liked coins. But I never realized how bad it was until i fell out with my Father because he wouldn't get rid of a coin. I even don't like seeing the word as it makes me think iof the things. Yuk. I'm not as much scared more they make me feel sick. Like nails down a blackboard. Also I am only 12 so i can't realy go to a therapist. Any help?

Yes, i absolutely HATE 1-2p's. I once fell out with my Dad because he had a coin in his pocket and i wouldn't go near him until he removed it. He thought i was being stupid. Is this a real phobia???
my daughter has a phobia of coins by: Anonymous

Coin Phobic from Ireland by: Nick
Another coin phobias here!
I think my fear stems from being on the bus to school as a child, and seeing a girl put all here copper coins in her mouth to hide them from her friend. Sorry, I'm sure that turned your stomachs, as it still does mine.
So copper coins are the worst. I only handle coins with my left hand, so I know my right hand is clean for picking up a sandwich for example. Foreign coins are also worse than domestic. Travelling to the US is great as I can use only dollar notes!!
If I see a coin on a kitchen counter I have to leave the room until it's removed, then I'll bleach the counter more than once.
Does anyone know of a coin cleaning/disinfecting machine?

Maybe we have Sensory Processing Disorder - or perhaps an hysterical parent? by: Anonymous
I have tried to rationally work out what the problem is that I have with coins, particularly coppers. I cannot bear to have them in sight when I am eating. If there is one on a table I feel physically sick as if they are filthy and must be nowhere near food being served. I thought that it was just psychological because my mother, who could be a very anxious, would say how dirty money was because it passed through many strangers' hands. She said I should wash my hands after dealing with coins and I always had the impression that coins made my hands stink.
So I decided to try to confront my fears and collected a pile of coins and placed them on a table. That did seem pretty disgusting to me. Then I decided to hold them in my hands and smell them. Copper coins no longer exist in Australia but I have a few old coins which I included in my experiment. And yes, those copper coins do really stink and do make your hands smell foul.
Thus maybe we all suffer from Sensory Processing Disorder and are all highly sensitive to this smell. I also cannot bear indoor lights on a hot day, which I feel make me even hotter - and my husband says that this is totally irrational.
However, my mother (the slightly hysterical one) could not stand bright lights and was even convinced that red pajamas or red sheets would make you feel hot in bed. Does anyone else think that the coin fear could also be some emotional thing picked up from an anxious parent?
Coppers are the worst by: Anonymous
Thanks goodness it's not just me. I've hated coins for as long as I can remember. Like many of the other posters they make me feel physically sick and coming across one in the street or on someones floor almost makes me retch. The dirtier they are, the more sick I feel. I'm not so bad with silver and £1/£2 coins now, but coppers I still detest. I actually won't buy something unless it ends in 5p or 10p. I also hate the sound of money jingling and get really pi**ed off with people who fiddle with change in their pockets. I've reached an awkward stage as my daughter has now started to play with money and my Mrs doesn't want me passing on my weird phobia to her by making an issue of it.
My son hates copper coins by: cointreau_
My son is 11 y/o and he absolutely dislike/hates coppers (1p-2p), we cant understand why, we tried and encourage him to count the pennies before and he refused it point blank, its so frustrating and now he is in secondary school, if he is buyin something he wont want the change back, and its getting a big issue in our household, is this really a phobia or what, any suggestions? please help.....

It all started in kindergareten, when they asked us to bring in a bag of coins and i was very scared of touching them. I wouldnt touch them so she called my mom. I've been through thearpist and all different things nothing has helped. Alsowhen i was a child my older brother put a penny up my butt. Now i live with my mom, i work in the tooth paste factory. it is a penny free enviroment.
Most copper makes me wretch by: Anonymous
The worst is old copper coins lying around, especially on the floor, it make me physically ill & I have to look away.
Also some go green with corrosion I think, that is a big no-no.
I wash my hands big time after handling copper coins, they are covered in gross dirt. Yuk.
Hate Coins by: Maian
Same w/ Emmaline & Anonymous; Atlst I'm felt sumhow relieved to know that I'm not alone w/ this kind of feeling, it's really weird, even close friends dont know im like this; well i think it's not really a phobia of coins but more of being annoyed by their very presence. Can't eat seeing coins around; I can't touch them (need to use gloves or plastic for holding/picking them); there were many instances when I try to hold coin change through paper bills and dropping them on d store floor... i know its psychological and i wish thers a cure... but i just cant stand d touching the coins surface, its just being OC i know but please DESTROY ALL THE COINS
Copper pennies by: Beth
I cant stand copper coins 1p's and 2p's. I also avoid wearing jewerly that leaves a funny smell on you. I get really annoyed at my family and my boyfriend when they leave coins out on the side or if one had fallen on the floor i refuse to go near that area of the room untill its hidden out of sight. I also find my self tending to put all my change from the shop in a charity box by the till. I get a sickening feeling when I hear people jingling coins or rubbing them together. I find it strange that I am the only person that I know with this phobia.
Who knew? by: Anonymous
Wow, I am SO RELIEVED that other people have this same weird fear. I seriously my whole life have thought I was the only one, and I have never told anyone about it either. But bllleeecccch, they really freak me out. I don't even like saying the word, lol. Man, I love the internet; you can always find other people going through the same things as you.

allergy? by: Michelle
My daughter has the exact same problem - has done all her life. Can not even look at coins, keys & (some) jewelery... I also can 'taste' the above by smelling &/or touching these things, so have never taken her 'fear' as a joke. When I investigated a few years back I realised the above items all contain one common ingredient... nickel. I therefore for the past few years considered that my daughter has a Nickel Allergy - not a phobia (& tell her siblings off for chasing her with coins!) :-) Don't feel weird - I'm certain this is physical, NOT psychological.
phobia by: Emmaline
i wouldnt say i have a total phobia of coins but i hate them. if i am buying something and honestly have to touch the coins then i do and then put them in my purse and then go wash my hands for like 5 minutes. i hate anything like coins and jewlery. idk what it is. another person said that when they r eating and theres a coin around they cant eat. im the same way. if i see a coin on the table. i cover it up. and when someone removes it. i wash that spot for a while. they are just gross. its not a fear or phobia i would say but more like an ocd kind of things. i hate germs and coins just have soo much germs and ever since i was 3 years old. ive just been bothered by it.
dislike of pennies by: Anonymous
My daughter has this, cant bear to touch them, look at them or have them in her purse, pennies, 2p's and 5p's, if she gets them in her change she gives them away to friends as she cant bear to take them and put them in her purse or tells the cashire to put them into the charity box. If they are on the table or worktop she has to get someone to move them. Wouldnt say she is scared of them, just doesnt like to be near them! weird! I suggested she put them in a piggy bank but she said no cause she would know they were in there looking at her!

Cuprolamniophobia-So that's what it is. by: Anonymous
It's so weird, I was five, and I remember being able to handle them but not since. It is so annoying, and what really grinds my gears is whenever people talk about eliminating the circulation of the penny, and how useless it is, and how much it costs the government to make these things and how they're bad for the environment. Nobody picks them up when they get dropped, they're literally not worth the cost of people bending over. But even though there is a huge consensus that these things are trash people keep making them. Why? Because people are stupid creatures of habit, and here I am thinking to myself how nice it would be if this thing that gives me the creeps would be eliminated.
cuprolaminophobia by: Shannon
My family has seriously made fun of me forever that I am afraid of coins. I can't look at them, smell them, or even touch them. Also, if there is even a coin on the floor or on a table near where I am eating I can't even eat until I can't see it anymore or someone gets rid of it. I have thought I was crazy this whole time!
