by: Anonymous

i thought i was the only one, i'm only young but i hate the smell of coins. They're dirty and full of bacteria. I hate it and physically feel sick when people put them in there mouth. I hate touching them, if i'm at a shop i try my best to avoid it and when they give me change it goes straight in my pocket or bag or purse. If i don't clean my hands immediately i get scared i'm passing on the germs or smelling.

A coin collector offers to help
by: matthewvincent

I love coins, but I am sensitive to the real and
crippling pain that you all feel. Let me try to offer two possible therapies.

1) Sensitivity reduction. For the last 15 to 20 years it has become the practice to encase valuable coins in sonically sealed plastic. If we could meet in person, I could offer one of these to you to pick up. The coin itself is in a plastic prison and could not possibly infect you. The next best thing would be to post a picture of such a a coin in plastic. You would be aware of the fact that the picture is not the coin, which resides in Connecticut. Your 'therapy' would consist of trying to touch your computer screen. If you succeed and the discomfort is bearable, we could progress to the next level.

2) Humor. Imaging a coin with arms and legs. It wears a top hat. In one hand is a cane. It is dancing. It chants, "Ha ha, you can't touch me!" The therapy would be to put your hand on the screen and to 'crush' it. Rub it out and away.

Let me know if it would be worth my time to try to help everyone.

Hang in there,
Matthew

I have this too. So does another member of my family which leads me to think it could be a genetic thing. Copper coins, keys, jewellery disgusts me. I gag and feel sick, especially if it's near food. I have to wash my hands if I touch them. I try not to carry pennies in my pocket and usually just throw them away. There must be a name for this??? Also I think it's a valid phobia as coins, keys etc must carry lots of germs.

I had this fear since childhood but it seem to be getting worker
by: Anonymous

Before it was just coins now it moved to jeweler and any metal that are dirty and have fine detail engraved in them. I am afraid it might get worse. My mother was diagnose with psychotic disorder where she think people are plotting against her even her family and I hope I don't ever develop it.

Penny Magnet
by: Anonymous

Hi All....
My sister has this, its been an on going battle for years and she suffers not only from this crippling phobia but also the punishment daily of having members of the family trying to "trick" her into handling the coins. It has caused a rift and I know she has come close to lashing out at my older sister as a result. However I know she has magnets she places in her purse which she finds useful..... Good luck everyone....

HATE THEM.
by: Anonymous

I've always been afraid of coins, but I never found out it was a phobia until recently (a few months ago?). I hate it when people carry SO MANY in their pockets. What makes it worse is that they're EVERYWHERE in my house. People are always leaving them on dressers, side tables, desks, EVERWHERE. I fear pennies the most and quarters the least. Especially when they're wet. Also, I can't stand to eat food while they're in my line of sight. I will not touch someone or something that has touched coins. I feel like the area is contaminated... lol. I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I'm also glad that my friends understand and don't take advantage of it.

Narrow the reason for a coin phobia
by: Matthew Vincent

Hello friends,
My name is Matthew and I am a coin collector. I have been a collector for over fifty years.
When I read through these posts I felt the need to offer some kind of specific help.

First, it is not at all unreasonable to fear coins because of the "germ" factor.
Would looking at coins be bearable to you if holding them is not? If so, I invite you to visit:
http://www.coincommunity.com
We are a world-wide group of collectors who learn from and teach to fellow collectors. A member wrote in to tell
of his feeling that he would get out of coins altogether. Not because of a phobia but because of a growing lack of interest. Among the responses was a link to this site.

That is why I am here. Within the comfort and safety of your home you may look at coins of all types and judge
your reluctance to view them. If you feel comfortable, then the "germ factor" may be a part of your misery.

To test this, have a (trusted) friend or family member wrap a coin in plastic wrap. You will not be touching the coin,
only the plastic. If you can bear to hold it, then you might want to focus on the "germ" factor.

If you cannot hold the coin at all, then your fear lies somewhere else.

I am at your service.

I find it particularly disgusting that, knowing of your fear, a so-called "friend" would wish to make you uncomfortable further by putting a coin in your path.

May you find comfort in sharing with each other.

Coins freak me out
by: Katie

Coins are disgusting. I can't look at one when I am eating. I can't stand them on the floor of my boyfriend's house (he thinks he's curing me by leaving them in germ-riddled puddles of water grime). I hate touching them but look a bit cray cray if I refuse to handle change in shops. They smell horrid when you touch them. The sound of change in people's pockets is nasty. Thinking about coins makes me want to wash. A lot.
Why? No idea. It's completely irrational. I have a similar feeling for paper money, keys, jewellery and door handles but to a much lesser extent.
I agree with an earlier comment in that I don't want to be cured; coins definitely deserve to be hated.

Keys
by: Anonymous

I have a phobia of keys. I cannot stand the sound of keys jingling. it scares me and i freak out, often trying to swat the keys out of the hand of the person holding them. once, i got so mad at my keys jingling, i broke the key ring. i now have to keep my keys in a mag because i cant deal with them just sitting in my bag or coat pocket...but i lost the bag and now refuse to keep my keys with me.

So glad I'm not crazy...
by: Anonymous

Ive been afraid of coins ever since was a little kid. For me, it's dimes. Ugh, just thinking about them freaks me out. I don't know what it is, but all coins are just disgusting. The sound they make when they rattle gives me shivers. I can't eat if I can see a coin, and if the coin is wet I nearly have a panic attack. Whenevr making purchases, I always try to buy things that will result in the least amount of change.

Phobia? More of a severe intolerance
by: Anonymous

I HATE NICKELS! And for some reason, it is only nickels. I read through the comments, and everyone talks about physically getting sick from coins, and my problem isn't nearly as severe. Whenever I get nickels back as change, immediately when I get outside I set it on the ground when no one is looking (what if they try to hand it back to me!?). I have no idea where my problem actually began, but I do know my mother had problems with pennies when she was little; she would throw pennies (and only pennies) in the garbage can. Why do I hate nickels so much??

Gross. .
by: Anonymous

I hate pennies & other types of coins. They are so gross.. Whenever i'm in a car, and i see a penny on the floor, i lift up my feet. I don't wanna touch that. :( They smell gross.. I REALLY hate when their wet or dirty. This sucks. ._. Stupid coins..

So glad I'm not alone on this
by: Phoebe

I've been cuprolaminophobic for as long as I can remember. To me coins are extremely disgusting and I would do anything to avoid it. Touching coins has always been very painful. I can never understand why people can have coins/change in their pockets/clothing, that disgusts the crap out of me. Whenever I receive change from a cashier, I make sure the coins are on top of the receipt so that my hands aren't touching them. And if I have to touch coins, I would wash my hands with a lot of soap thoroughly immediately afterwards, despite that I think soap may roughen my hands. I prefer hand sanitizer and I would avoid soap if possible. Some people don't understand and think that I'm dirty whereas in fact they are the ones who are being silly.

I cannot stand it if a coin is on my table or touching any of my belongings. There's one time I literally screamed when I found out some coins had come out from my wallet and fallen into my bag. I treasure my bags and having coins in it makes me feel extremely disgusted. I immediately poured all the coins out and couldn't help feeling sick and was dying to give my bag a thorough clean.

I have the same phobia with keys but not as bad. If it is my parents' car keys, I will be able to hold them because I know they are clean (or relatively cleaner). It's just the smell of metal that really makes me sick. Touching keys disgusts me as well. I will put my keys in a clean coin bag if I have to carry them around.

What's more, I can't stand cheap jewelries. Cheap jewelries are disgusting, it's like they are gonna rust at any time. If it is real gold or real silver like from Tiffany & Co., then I'll be fine because I know that it's clean, it won't rust and it is of good quality. But cheap jewelries are a big no no. The reason I only have a handful of Jewelries is because I have to make sure they are of good quality. Most people don't understand but I really can't stand it. The smell and the texture of cheap jewelries... no, just no. It's the cheap metal that bothers me. I bought one cheap necklace earlier this year for one event and I threw it away right after because I couldn't stand how disgusting it was.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one
by: Kathy

Oh my gosh. I am so glad it's not just me!! I have had this fear as far back as I can remember. I remember when is was younger my mum used to tell me I was silly and my sister used to mock me by throwing them at me and leaving them in my bed room and I used to cry so much. As I got older I realised that the best bet was not to tell anyone and my sister actually thought I grew out of it. I haven't spoke about it since about a year ago my boyfriend dropped change out of his pocket into my bed and I flipped and refused to sleep in the bed before the sheets were clean, but I still thought about it so I had to buy new sheets. I try to pay on my card as much as possible so I don't have to touch it. I can't eat if I can see them. I wash my hands immediately if I touch them. It's vile. I wish there was a way to get over it. I'm glad I'm not the only one though (:

thank you friend
by: Anonymous

My phobia started when I was small, I hated buttons and coins, I don't know why, my family just said I was lying and that I just want to be the centre of attention, not true, I still can't touch the small coins, or loose buttons, but my friends are supportive and my best friend told me, that since she found out about it she has kind of started disliking them too. She says she can see that they are full of germs but she still uses them. I can't bare it when there's change somewhere, I have to cover it up, when I'm in a shop, I always have to add everything up, so that they won't give me back small coins.. SOOOOOOOOO happy that I'm not the only one to have this horrible thing. I'm so lucky to have support too.

Hate it
by: Anonymous

I despise coins very much. It smells bad and disgusting. I hate tiny coins. If I see coins on the toilet floor I feel disgusted and lose my appetite. I hate wet coins, it looks terrible. If I touch it, I must find powder or lotion and put on my palm. Coins are terrible things in the world. I wish all all monies are made of paper for God sake.

Why
by: Anonymous

I have had this phobia since I was 2 years old. I don't know why but like most of you I hate copper coins. Some of you are lucky because you had to use plastic coins in school, I had to use real coins. I was gagging for most of the lesson. Reading this page really helped, so thanks.

phobia
by: Anonymous

Wow, its actually soothing for me to know that there are others just like me. Having a fear of coins and keys sounds incredibly weird to others and it does get very serious. I can't stand the smell of keys and coins, If I am handed with coins, I make sure my sleeve is over my hand so that it doesnt touch me or make sure the receipt is in between my hands and the coins. I literally yell at my family if they handle coins in front of me or if they place it anywhere near me .. My family have become use to my phobia, however they still find it exaggerating.

Ewwww
by: Anonymous

D: When I was little my mom got this huge jar of COINS it made me so disgusted that I threw up! No joke!

I thought I was being silly
by: Anonymous

I've had a fear of coins ever since I was a little girl and my mom would always think I was over-reacting. But I seriously cannot even put my drink in a cupholder that has a coin in it. I can't even eat when there is a coin around. Whenever there is one on a table I move it with a cloth or cover it up. And after I move it I wipe off the area. When I am taking change at a store I always make sure the receipt is between the coins and my hand. After I handle coins I always have to wash my hands because of their smell. The coin that bothers me the most are pennies. Paper money doesn't bother me though. Cutlery, doorknobs, or keys don't bother me at all-only coins.

Guess I'm not the only one
by: Anonymous

I can't remember since when i had a fear of coins. My friends and family would tell me how ridiculous it is but now that there are others, it doesn't seem so ridiculous anymore.
I remembered smacking one of my friends because he dropped down a coin on my chair when i was about to sit on the chair.. Horrible memory..

just coins and keys effect me.
by: Anonymous

I can touch coins or keys at all. When I have to I hold keys by the plastic part on the car key and when given change after a purchase I take it so the receipt is between the coins and my hand, then wrap the coins in the receipt without touching them. It is only coins and keys that effect me. I don't mind cutlery or door handles at all.

Husband has this
by: Anonymous

I could never quite buy into (no pun intended) my husband's fear of coins, but after reading this I believe it's real and will be more sympathetic going forward.

He hates coins, keys and some jewlery, but nickels in particular. He says it is because they are more smooth and almost have an oily texture which makes them seem wet. Coins on the floor in our house particularly bother him. I liken it to the same way I would react of there was a spider on our floor.

He says when coins are in his pocket, he can feel them pressing into his leg and he imagines them burning his leg for some reason.

He says he has made peace with his own keys as he has to carry them, but he doesn't like other people's keys. He also does not like loose buttons or rings.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I understand this better now.

Thought it was only me also
by: Anonymous

The sound of loose change jingling about makes my teeth hurt, the same with forks, but only forks.

finally relief
by: Anonymous

I am 15 year old and I have anxiety attacks when I am anywhere near coins. My family tells me I'm stupid and that I'm just being dramatic, but when I see coins in a cupholder or any place I instantly panic and if they come anywhere near me I feel like throwing up and I shake, scream, and run away. I will hysterically cry. Please if you're reading this and have a loved one affected by this phobia take this seriously.

Phobia
by: Anonymous

I don't have the coin phobia as serious as most of you but I have a phobia of nickles. I mean I can touch them and think about them but they really annoy me and I have no idea why though. I'm really confused.

Suffering
by: Anonymous

I have had this phobia ever since I can remember. My family would find it ridiculous, often telling me to stop looking for attention...and would force me to touch coins by making me sort through them in my home...I felt like I was dying. Having to handle coins in math class was my worst memory as a child.Ever since one cashier wouldn't keep the change, even though I kept on insisting, she gave me a peculiar look, I have gotten better, and everytime I touch a coin or stop myself from moving it...I feel like I have overcome so much. But sometimes my fear is more powerful than my will power.I try hiding it and none of my friends know.My family doesn't understand when I hyperventilate when coins are placed on the dining table.

I'm not the only one
by: Anonymous

I never thought anything of my disgust for change until my boyfriend pointed out how strange it was. I hate touching change!! I start gagging when I have to touch it, and if I do I have to wash my hands immediately after. It leaves a gross smell on my hands. I have a similar feeling on keys but it's not as bad.

I thought I was the only one!
by: Foxfire31

I also have a fear of pennies, but its got better as I've got older. I still hate them and will usually say keep the change or put them in the charity box. Sometimes I will drop them on the street on purpose but a few times I've done this and someone has picked up the penny and tried to give it back to me! Now I make sure no ones looking when I drop them. One of my worse fears is at the arcade when they have those awful machines where you have to put the coins in to make the coins drop out! The most disgusting invention ever. At my workplace i have to manage the petty cash and it makes me sick when i have to count all the pennies! Yuk!! But i've learned to live with it but will still go out of my way to avoid them. I think my worse fear would be to be dropped in a bath full of pennies! the thought is sickening!!

my phobia of coins
by: Anonymous

I am fifteen and I hate coins, especially small ones, I can't touch them, I am cuprolaminophobic since 2007, don't know the reason. touching peoples hands with manicures on their fingers and touching earrings makes me sick too, if there is cure please TELL ME

Glad I am not alone on this.....
by: Roythecowboy

Any coins to me are the most vile things on this planet! The worst are the brown ones! Some people who know my phobia take advantage of it and at one work place I ended up violently punching a colleague who put one down my back as he thought it was funny. From then on, nobody dared to mock me.
The sight of brown coins will make me physically sick, if i see one lying around my house from my kids, I hit the roof, touching one is a no no and will use a tissue or another object to remove it.
Hell for me would be emptying the machines in a penny arcade, I'd rather clean toilets!,!!

i'm with you
by: Anonymous

same fear here. thinking about it makes me shudder, and i couldnt even read some of your comments because it would elicit that feeling

Thank God!
by: Anonymous

I have had this phobia my whole life. I can't stand them near me at all. I can't have them in my kitchen or near any food at all. I can't eat with them anywhere near me. The thought of them in my bed makes me physically ill. When I was a child I alos had a problem with buttons but have outgrown that one as I got older. I have always been embarrassed to tell people about it and have always just suffered in silence as my friends and loved ones put their change on their dressers or dining tables. After 32 years of this I am so glad to know I'm not crazy and there are others ot there who live with this!

Fear of coins (and buttons)
by: Veronica

I am blown away today as I knew my daughter had a huge problem with coins and discovered today that she has a massive fear of buttons as well. The funny thing is came home with my new found discovery and proceeded to tell my husband about it only to discover he is the same. Now after 25 years have I realized why he will only wear tshirts and wind cheaters. both of them cannot eat in the presence of coins or buttons, and wet ones make both of them want to be physically sick. 'My daughter would never eat recess or lunch at school and most of this was due to having to look at disgusting buttons on kids uniforms or other kids handling coins. keys and earrings have the same effect. My daughter never told me about this until recently (although I knew about the coins), but for her to confess her fear of buttons as well and then to find out my husband is the same and they have both managed to keep it hidden is amazing. She has taken comfort in finding these websites and discovering she is not alone.

Its called Cuprolaminophobia

I just dont like them cause they carry germs and scratch my phone. I use gold dollars for soda machines, and debit cards for purchases since cash has even more germs. ( Im also picky about my eating utensils )

OH THANK GOD. I'm not alone. Even if I hear them, I freak out.

so unhappy, but oh so glad
by: Anonymous

I didn't think this phobia existed on anyone else, so I'm glad like all of you! It's gross to think about putting them in one's mouth, and I try my best to hide it, but I don't like touching them. I've tried, it's not as bad as I think, but it's that thought of putting them in someone's mouth. Okay, I know I'm grossing everyone out now. But why and how do we fear coins??

Yes!!
by: Anonymous

I'm so glad that other people share this fear. When I tell people about it they think it's so funny and weird. I've had a phobia of pennies since I was two. I don't even like to look at them. If I find one I will it in the trash. Pennies aren't allowed in my house. My phobia is so bad that my husband and children have it.

I seriously thought I am the only one with this fear I thought I was queer and was the only one.f A lot of people who know about this take advantage of it and start messing around with me. I feel like throwing up whenever Im near one especially if its dirty or wet and that is the same for any other metal objects that are dirty or wet. But I hate how coins are literally EVERYWHERE! I would appreciate it if someone can explain this because I had this fear since I was little.

Son phobia of coins and buttons
by: Donald

My son has a form of phobia of coins and buttons. He won't handle coins at all. He has the change that he gets back from buying something put into the bag and leaves it there after he takes out what he buys. He says he doesn't like the feel of the coins and he has never had a shirt with buttons on it ever. He does have pants with a single button and he is ok with that but I just don't know why or how he got this way.

Zippers and Coins
by: kristiao

I also strongly dislike coins, especially when they're wet slimy and gathering dirt. Coins hiding in a sofa. Coins in a tent. I also hate zippers with a passion. Cant stand wearing pants with them. Coins in a pocket wearing trousers with a fly - panic. Metal neclaces is an evil invention.
I dont want to be cured, coins deserves to be dispised!

by: Rosa

I don't like seeing pennies on the floor or on the counter and I hate seeing coins in the cup holder of someone's car. I refuse to put my drink on top of them. I hate all coins but I managed to deal with quarters. But pennies freak me the hell out. I thought I was the only one with this problem. I hate having the feeling of loose change in my pockets too. It makes me feel dirty.

so good to find comapany
by: Anonymous

For pretty much as long as I remember I have hated coins, particularly those below 50p, I am 15 and my family think I'm doing it for attention, my brother will put pennies in my room which makes me feel sick and I have to clean the room. Memories which may have triggered the phobia could be my brother putting coppers in his mouth (still makes me shudder) and my dad putting coins in ketchup to 'clean' them. Like many others here I will ask cashiers to keep the change or put it in the charity box which is why I prefer to use my debit card. I even hated the plastic coins we used when learning to count money in primary school. If I have coins in my hand I feel my palms goping sweaty and wash them as soon as I can.I have to use another object to move them out of the way when I see them around the house because they make me feel sick. I also HATE the jingly sound in pockets and the smell left on my hands.I'm so glad I found somewhere to read about other peoples experiences..

Thank you!
by: Bailey

I HATE COINS! i refuse touch them or smell them or hold them. it disgusts me when people eat coins or metal. i hate the jean buttons too.. my grandma used to tell e how if you find a penny on the road it's good luck and i was so afraid i would almost cry. even in the car, my parents put coins in the cup holders. i won't even set my cup on top of that, although the coins won't touch the drink. THEY DISGUST ME. I hate them and i hate when my friends and family touch them. i also hate my parents wedding rings. they will be holding a pill in their hand (on their ring) and i will throw it out and get a new one. It's unhealthy to a point where i will tell a cashier to keep the change or i will slide the coins off with a sleeve and hide them. i also hate things metal-ly. in science we were doing a metals lab and we needed to use a penny to test the hardness and i got in trouble and a C on it because i refused to touch it. i mean you can't blame me right? I AM THANKFUL I FOUND THIS PAGE BECAUSE no one gets it. my family and friends are like "what's wrong with coins?" and every time i say EVERYTHING!

THANK YOU!!
by: Bailey

by: Anonymous

I am so scared of coins, especally pennies. I think they are gross. I have been chased around the house numerous times by someone holding a coin. Whenever I get change back I always have my friend take the coins or purposly drop them on the floor and leave them there.

COINS = Eeew

Hi I am from Thailand. You are not alone! I am just 12 years old and I am really scared of coins. I don;t know why, but I'm scared since 2 years old. Whenever I saw coins on the floor, or on the bed, desk, anywhere (at home) I will ask my parents to keep it in the wallet. Coins are eww, dirty, smelly, there's no word to describe it. Especially when coins are wet, I'm going to walk away. :(

Filthy
by: Kaley W. Iowa.

I am 20 and have had this problem since I was 9. I remember putting coins in a giant piggy bank at my gma's house up until that age. I'm not sure what changed but she was an alcoholic and I wasn't allowed to see her anymore. Maybe that was it. Anyway, I DESPISE coins. They're crawling with germs and make your hands smell. I hate looking at them, I can't think of anything else when they are around me. Some metals bother me too and absolutely NO ONE is allowed to borrow my earrings as they are tainted with nastiness if someone else wears them. I also have to drive my car with a steering wheel cover otherwise I can feel the germs crawling on me. I am mostly afraid of coins though. I can't stand the thought of warm keys either. If I am shopping I tell the clerk to keep the change or I unzip my wallet and make them put it in. Once my friend Kitty put a penny in her mouth in middle school and I almost threw up. I am the only person I know with this problem. If I have to touch them I pull my sleeve over my hand or use a paper towel but even that freaks me out. If someone else touches coins i make them wash there hands or I avoid there hands because then they are tainted. My family, friends, and boyfriend think its ridiculous and funny. I just can't get over it and I don't think I ever will.

I'm not alone :)
by: Rei

I watched videos about phobias awhile ago from youtube, some people scared of animals, some scared over things that normal people might think it is stupid or freak to be fear of. Made me realized that I'm not the only one in this world that has weird phobia - phobia of coins. So I googled and glad that I found this site and see that I'm not the only one who suffering from this weird phobia.

Before this, I always think I am weird and it really upset me. Seems like I'm not alone having this phobia. Makes me glad that I'm not the only one that fighting over this weird phobia. People might laugh and say to us, why we must afraid of coins, they wont understand how the feeling. I tried to overcome it, but it seems useless. Until now, I still keep on trying to fix and solve the phobia, but still no luck :(

I'm fine with large coins but I freak out over the small sizes especially the cooper coin. If I see them, I will hold my breath, close my mouth so tight, and I feel weird feeling at the end of my lips. I cant stand to be near around the coins. I remembered I told my family about it, they dont really bother about it, maybe they think I'm just joking around, it really sad. I didnt know how this phobia started but what I can remember is my mom brought a lots of cooper coins when I was like 5 years old and give me to play with. I remembered I'm fine with the coins that time. Well, maybe something happen after that. Maybe someone scared me with those coins and maybe that is how it trigger the phobia.

I'm 24 now and I really hope I can overcome this. Its really stress me out when I think about it. I couldnt bring myself to tell my fiancee about this. I dont think he will understand. But I really hope that I can overcome this before getting married cuz he is the type that likes to mess around his coins everywhere. I visited his family's house and always found those cooper coins like everywhere around the house. If I still cant cope with the phobia, I cant imagine what will happen to me when we go visit his parent's house after getting married. I'm so dead :(

I always keep my mouth shut near coins. one time i saw a mini tower of coins and i ran for my life. pennies are worse! EEEEEEEK!HELP!

Keep them away!
by: Anonymous

Ugh, I hate coins, especially pennies and all the small ones. I have no idea why, I just always have. I feel like I'll throw up whenever I have to handle one, especially pennies with lots of rust and dirt on them. They are DISGUSTING. I have to cover coins up with paper or something whenever I see them. I had no idea other people had this fear! Thank God for the internet.

i have this too!
by: Ama

Im so glad to find out others have it too. I hate coins, keys, small metal stuff. No one understands. Ill scream when i see coins on the floor and ill get it removed. I wrap the small change in my receipt and throw it away most of the time. I get really piss when someone give change of lots of coins. I always count the amount of stuff before i pay. Ill add some stuff just to make sure i dont get any coin change back. Or maybe pay by card. My dad thought i was pretending and tht im acting like a rich kid that i couldnt even look at coins. It hurts. :(

You can avoid it.
by: Anonymous

The more your run from the problem, the more the problem runs after you.

Being a kid , it's Ok. But as you grow elder and you understand that this is one phobia only. Phobia is just a negative feeling.

Don't convince your mind that you have phobia. It's easy to teach yourself that you are sick. However, it needs a little practice to make yourself understand that you are normal.

You guys are not able to overcome this phobia, as since childhood, you are treating yourself as sick. which is making you more sick. Try to treat yourself as normal. It's not a joke and also I'm understanding your problem.

But try to convince yourself that you're OK . Then repeat itself in your mind that you feel OK to hold or see the coins. Try to visualize in your mind that you are holding a coin and nothing is happening to you. You are rather happy. Once you are able to visualize this happiness , due to feeling of being normal, then try to do it practically. Just think, if you will feel bad, you will leave the coin. Try holding the coin for 2 minutes, then leave. Just feel happy to think that nothing happened to you, as you had thought and now you are confident enough to handle your problems. Repeat it next day for same time. Then next day may be hold the coin for 5 minutes. Each day practice it with gradually increasing the time.
Build confidence in yourself that it's just a negative feeling and you are strong enough to handle this. Once you are able to handle for some time, you can handle it forever only.

Just a matter of confidence building and educate yourself right and not wrong. You're normal people and you're not sick, but till date you are treating yourselves as sick.

What really matters? If people do pity on you, thinking you as sick OR if you are happy to know that you are normal.

Yes, you're normal and you can handle it. Have faith in yourself!

All the Best!

I have this!
by: Anonymous

I didn't know it had a name or that anyone else felt the same way. Mine is a little different because I hate dimes. With a passion. I hate the size of them--it makes no sense that they are right behind a quarter in value but they are the smallest coin. A friend of mine covered my desk, keyboard and phone with dimes on my birthday. People think I'm weird and that it's funny but I hate them. If I get dimes back as change from a vending machine, I will leave them in the coin return. I have no idea how long I've had this but I'm glad to know it isn't just me!

Copper coins
by: Anonymous

Im 15 and ive had the fear of coins less than 20p since i was a baby. I really dont know what caused it to start.

Coppers are the worst. I cant bear the sight of them, knowing they are in the room with me. If they touch, for example, a bag of sweets (not making contact with the sweets) i wouldnt eat them. If it touched my clothes whilst wearing them, i would shower and change. If it touched my skin in a shop, i would either wash my hands as soon as possible or use hand sanitiser. If it was left on a table, i would scream and get someone to move it or move it using paper etc.

Im glad im not the only one who has this phobia.

£2 coin phobia
by: Maddie

Not sure if anyone else has this but £2 coins make me sick. Other coins aren't much of a problem but £2s are just intollerable.
If I am ever given one as change I insist they swap it or spend it as soon as possible.
I can't bare to touch them - which was a problem when I used to work in a shop. My stomach turned every time I was given one and I had to get rid of them all as quickly as possible and wash my hands after touching them.
So...is this really, really abnormal to have such a phobia of £2 coins?

My little(ish) rant
by: Lenalee

They. Are. Disgusting.
Since forever I have never been able to touch them, it used to be a lot worse. At primary school they would give us these fake plastic coins to play with, practice counting money or whatever. And I seriously would NOT touch them! Even if they were plastic. They were these freaky counter things in the common copper and silver colours.
I remember in school my peers would stick their lunch money in their mouths and I would end up alone in the corner gagging away. Embarrassing, I know.
I can't touch them AT ALL! Or even look at them, when I am eating in the common room at school where it is a COMPLETE tip and people leave change all over the place, I can't eat if there is a penny on the chair opposite me. My friend has to cover it up or chuck it out the window or something!
Some of my friends find it really weird and funny, cue the throwing coins at me. One time, my friend put a coin near me and I freaked out, knocked their hand away and strangled her. Well, as much strangling as a tiny 16 year old could strangle.
I work at a cafe place and one time, a customer dropped a handful of coppers in my hands when I wasn't paying attention. I just stared at it. Shock. Horror. Disgust. I had to use every inch of my will power not to throw it back at him and scream. I just chucked it under the counter, where the help of a fellow employee, cleaned up.
I then proceeded to bleach my hands out back.
Coppers are the worst.
They are my enemies.
Die.

Yucky coins!
by: A, Dublin

I hate them too, especially coppers. Its been that way as long as I can remember. I don't like metal in general, I don't wear any jewellery and am not keen on keys or clothing with metal on it, but coins definitely the worst. I can't eat if there are coins in sight and have to get people to remove them for me.

I handle them with my right hand if I have to shop (and wash my hands ASAP after), and only eat snack food with my left. Would you believe, I had to work on a till in a DIY store and had to touch coins all day long? It was horrible, but I managed it. However, that exposure didn't 'cure' my phobia. People have suggested hypnotism, but I don't like coins so why would I want to like them?!

I won't date a guy who wears jewellery and I don't think I could marry someone who proposed to me with a ring as he obviously wouldn't know me well enough!

I manage stainless steel cuttelry with no intricate patterns fine, but can be fussy with some knives and forks.

I would say I have improved over the years, I still hate metal, but it certainly doesn't prevent me from doing anything in my life. I work in a hospital, and thankfully we can wear protective gloves before we touch any metal!

I think the phobia of coins is on the OCD spectrum as a common theme is the dirtiness of coins, and believe me, after a day on the till in the shop, my hands were filthy!

I have this phobia too.
by: Anonymous

Every since I was young looking at the pennies which were caked with dirt and rust made my stomach lurch. I can't eat in the same room as them or touch them. If I see one on the counter, I have to move it from the room with a piece of paper. I think my phobia stems from the fact that they are handeled by so many people and no one knows where they are coming from, and the metal aspect makes me feel uneasy and digusted. I always thought that I was the only person fearing coing, but since I have discovered this blog, it makes me feel better to know that i'm not alone.

Coin Phobic from Ireland
by: Nick

Another coin phobias here!

I think my fear stems from being on the bus to school as a child, and seeing a girl put all here copper coins in her mouth to hide them from her friend. Sorry, I'm sure that turned your stomachs, as it still does mine.

So copper coins are the worst. I only handle coins with my left hand, so I know my right hand is clean for picking up a sandwich for example.
Foreign coins are also worse than domestic. Travelling to the US is great as I can use only dollar notes!!

If I see a coin on a kitchen counter I have to leave the room until it's removed, then I'll bleach the counter more than once.

Does anyone know of a coin cleaning/disinfecting machine?

Maybe we have Sensory Processing Disorder - or perhaps an hysterical parent?
by: Anonymous

I have tried to rationally work out what the problem is that I have with coins, particularly coppers. I cannot bear to have them in sight when I am eating. If there is one on a table I feel physically sick as if they are filthy and must be nowhere near food being served. I thought that it was just psychological because my mother, who could be a very anxious, would say how dirty money was because it passed through many strangers' hands. She said I should wash my hands after dealing with coins and I always had the impression that coins made my hands stink.

So I decided to try to confront my fears and collected a pile of coins and placed them on a table. That did seem pretty disgusting to me. Then I decided to hold them in my hands and smell them. Copper coins no longer exist in Australia but I have a few old coins which I included in my experiment. And yes, those copper coins do really stink and do make your hands smell foul.

Thus maybe we all suffer from Sensory Processing Disorder and are all highly sensitive to this smell. I also cannot bear indoor lights on a hot day, which I feel make me even hotter - and my husband says that this is totally irrational.

However, my mother (the slightly hysterical one) could not stand bright lights and was even convinced that red pajamas or red sheets would make you feel hot in bed. Does anyone else think that the coin fear could also be some emotional thing picked up from an anxious parent?

Coppers are the worst
by: Anonymous

Thanks goodness it's not just me. I've hated coins for as long as I can remember. Like many of the other posters they make me feel physically sick and coming across one in the street or on someones floor almost makes me retch. The dirtier they are, the more sick I feel. I'm not so bad with silver and £1/£2 coins now, but coppers I still detest. I actually won't buy something unless it ends in 5p or 10p. I also hate the sound of money jingling and get really pi**ed off with people who fiddle with change in their pockets. I've reached an awkward stage as my daughter has now started to play with money and my Mrs doesn't want me passing on my weird phobia to her by making an issue of it.

My son hates copper coins
by: cointreau_

My son is 11 y/o and he absolutely dislike/hates coppers (1p-2p), we cant understand why, we tried and encourage him to count the pennies before and he refused it point blank, its so frustrating and now he is in secondary school, if he is buyin something he wont want the change back, and its getting a big issue in our household, is this really a phobia or what, any suggestions? please help.....

Most copper makes me wretch
by: Anonymous

The worst is old copper coins lying around, especially on the floor, it make me physically ill & I have to look away.

Also some go green with corrosion I think, that is a big no-no.

I wash my hands big time after handling copper coins, they are covered in gross dirt. Yuk.

Hate Coins
by: Maian

Same w/ Emmaline & Anonymous; Atlst I'm felt sumhow relieved to know that I'm not alone w/ this kind of feeling, it's really weird, even close friends dont know im like this; well i think it's not really a phobia of coins but more of being annoyed by their very presence. Can't eat seeing coins around; I can't touch them (need to use gloves or plastic for holding/picking them); there were many instances when I try to hold coin change through paper bills and dropping them on d store floor... i know its psychological and i wish thers a cure... but i just cant stand d touching the coins surface, its just being OC i know but please DESTROY ALL THE COINS

Copper pennies
by: Beth

I cant stand copper coins 1p's and 2p's. I also avoid wearing jewerly that leaves a funny smell on you. I get really annoyed at my family and my boyfriend when they leave coins out on the side or if one had fallen on the floor i refuse to go near that area of the room untill its hidden out of sight. I also find my self tending to put all my change from the shop in a charity box by the till. I get a sickening feeling when I hear people jingling coins or rubbing them together. I find it strange that I am the only person that I know with this phobia.

Who knew?
by: Anonymous

Wow, I am SO RELIEVED that other people have this same weird fear. I seriously my whole life have thought I was the only one, and I have never told anyone about it either. But bllleeecccch, they really freak me out. I don't even like saying the word, lol. Man, I love the internet; you can always find other people going through the same things as you.

ME TOO!
by: coco

I also have phobia of coin the are nasty and i get sick when i see them i also scream when i have then touch me. people make fun of me but its true i cant stand coin jewerly and anything like that

allergy?
by: Michelle

My daughter has the exact same problem - has done all her life. Can not even look at coins, keys & (some) jewelery... I also can 'taste' the above by smelling &/or touching these things, so have never taken her 'fear' as a joke. When I investigated a few years back I realised the above items all contain one common ingredient... nickel. I therefore for the past few years considered that my daughter has a Nickel Allergy - not a phobia (& tell her siblings off for chasing her with coins!) :-) Don't feel weird - I'm certain this is physical, NOT psychological.

phobia
by: Emmaline

i wouldnt say i have a total phobia of coins but i hate them.
if i am buying something and honestly have to touch the coins then i do and then put them in my purse and then go wash my hands for like 5 minutes. i hate anything like coins and jewlery.
idk what it is. another person said that when they r eating and theres a coin around they cant eat. im the same way. if i see a coin on the table. i cover it up. and when someone removes it. i wash that spot for a while. they are just gross. its not a fear or phobia i would say but more like an ocd kind of things. i hate germs and coins just have soo much germs and ever since i was 3 years old. ive just been bothered by it.

dislike of pennies
by: Anonymous

My daughter has this, cant bear to touch them, look at them or have them in her purse, pennies, 2p's and 5p's, if she gets them in her change she gives them away to friends as she cant bear to take them and put them in her purse or tells the cashire to put them into the charity box. If they are on the table or worktop she has to get someone to move them. Wouldnt say she is scared of them, just doesnt like to be near them! weird! I suggested she put them in a piggy bank but she said no cause she would know they were in there looking at her!

Cuprolamniophobia-So that's what it is.
by: Anonymous

It's so weird, I was five, and I remember being able to handle them but not since. It is so annoying, and what really grinds my gears is whenever people talk about eliminating the circulation of the penny, and how useless it is, and how much it costs the government to make these things and how they're bad for the environment. Nobody picks them up when they get dropped, they're literally not worth the cost of people bending over. But even though there is a huge consensus that these things are trash people keep making them. Why? Because people are stupid creatures of habit, and here I am thinking to myself how nice it would be if this thing that gives me the creeps would be eliminated.

cuprolaminophobia
by: Shannon

My family has seriously made fun of me forever that I am afraid of coins. I can't look at them, smell them, or even touch them. Also, if there is even a coin on the floor or on a table near where I am eating I can't even eat until I can't see it anymore or someone gets rid of it. I have thought I was crazy this whole time!

The person in my family with this issue has the most problems with pennies as well but all coins bother him. He traces it back to his older brother pouring a full bank bag into his bed then remaking the bed so that he found them only after crawling into the bed to go to sleep
