Mould in Bedroom
by: Anonymous

I also have problems with mould following an outbreak in our house during a very hot and humid summer. I came back from holiday to find mould on the back of a cupboard in my room, on my wash basket and on some personal items in drawers. Although I removed the basket and cupboard, threw what I could out and cleaned the rest I am still paranoid that I have missed a bit and that I will one day find it has returned. I find myself looking at the smallest of marks to see if it is mould. I am scared to touch the areas where the mould was in case they are 'dirty'. I also enjoy family history and am terrified of old photos etc being ruined.

I understand here's some help

I have a very rational fear of mold, some of it is very deadly but the best way to overcome is to face it. If you run off gather your thoughts and if you have to, use a spray bottle with a little bleach and some water. Mist it. Then mist it with hydrogen peroxide it neutralizes the bleach ( for the smell)and helps kill the bold through the release of oxygen gas. But don't feel bad, when I was a boy I was afraid of plants...said I could see them grow. If it helps get a box of rubber gloves and face masks from autozone, cost like $25 after taxes. I'm a mechanic and you wouldn't believe the stuff I've seen growing in people's cars.

You are by no means alone. I too am terrified if mould. I'm just so ashamed too because I'm not scared of anything else.... not spiders or snakes or heights or anything with at least some understandable risk root but I know how stupid and irrational it sounds. I have tried for so many years to combat it but mould and in fact all decaying matter completely freaks me out. It makes me jump, scream, sometimes I even cry, shake and then I have to wash myself head to toe until I feel better. It is silly I know but I have found only one way to deal with it... as you say, take a deep breath, walk away and tell someone. :(

Oh, I know what you mean!

As I said above. I'm also terrified of mold. It used to be part of mycophobia, I believe, (well if fear of mushrooms is involved with mycophobia, as you implied) because I also used to be terrified of mushrooms, but then I mostly beat that fear. However, mold still utterly terrifies me. Just earlier today, I found mold growing on something at my house, and then proceded to scream, run into the other room, and practically beg my brother (who was in my house at the time) to get rid of it. Then, I also washed my hands. Now, I still feel like my skin's crawling, which actually, is how I respond to all of my fears, included my other phobia, which is a fear of fish.

I am the same

I have the same fear... its goes back to when I was a child - we were very poor, and the first house we lived in was very damp and the walls of the basement were covered in green slimy mold. If I see mold, I freak out, and have nightmares for days after.
