How To Battle Germ Phobia
Germ phobia is very common among people and can circumscribe the daily activities of the sufferer to an abnormal extent. This is still a prevalent problem in today's society, and can cause unwanted distress amongst the victims.
Fear of germs can be defined as “a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of germs”.
Germ phobia is identified by a number of names, such as Spermatophobia, Verminophobia and fear of germs. The problem is so grave that it can have negative impacts on the social life of a person.
The nagging problem can snatch a person's sanity and detach him from his loved ones.
The symptoms for germ phobia incorporate rapid breathing, sweating, irregular heartbeat, feelings of dread, nausea, shortness of breath and many more.
Actually the fear of germs can grip a person to such great extent, that the phobic may not eat food, not bathe and not drink beverages and confine himself to a single room and a world of his own.
Fear of germs can range from a relatively mild stage to an acute stage.
Suppose when a person is out of his home, he may be afraid to use the public toilet without some type of barrier like a toilet seat cover or a toilet paper.
However, sometimes the situation can be so serious and the individual may be afraid to leave their homes because they have to confront filth in the public places.
Treatment for Germ Phobia
There are two types of treatments for the phobia of germs, which include immersion therapy and medication. Immersion therapy actually exposes the person to those situations which he or she fears the most.
For example, the sufferer should be encouraged to pick up a paper from the floor and throw it in the dustbin, but not washing the hand thereafter. Alternatively, he or she may be encouraged to use the public telephone and not washing the hand.
While this method claims success, it involves a great deal of mental pain.
Medication is not very helpful to keep germ phobia at bay. After all, medications can only suppress the symptoms, not treat the underlying disease.
Harmful Effects of Killing Germs
Most of the products found in the market do not kill 100 % germs. This is because if all the germs are killed then our immunities will not be challenged sufficiently. As a result, we will lose the capability to battle the detrimental germs in our environment and this can lead to major diseases and even death.
Therefore, it is very important for us to be exposed to the germs, to enable our immune system function properly.
