I thought I was the only one.
by: Mariana

The same happens to me. I have tried to overcome the anxiety, but it never works. I tried to go to goodwill to save money on used goods, but I couldn't pick up anything from the shelves, I had a terrible anxiety, and could not get out of my mind the thought that I needed to wash my hands as soon as possible.
And same happens when I watch really old movies. I cannot eat in front of the TV when an old movie is playing.

fear of old things and eating
by: Anonymous

I am totally the same with the watching old things on the tv and eating at the same time. I somehow think that the 'oldness' and 'foistiness' has got into whatever food I am eating and I feel like I can taste it in the food and I need to be sick.
I thought it was a normal thing and was talking with someone about it the other day. The looked at me like I was crazy. Well at least I am not alone :-) x

I can relate to the fear of old things. I'm quite surprised it is not more common.

Fear of old things

It is interesting - is it not? - that there is a term for fear of new things or novelty(cainotophobia) but no corresponding term for fear of old things? Also, there is no term for fear of tradition.

The closest term might be oikophobia, which is fear of familiar things. Many people seem to be afflicted by this without knowing it.

Old Age and wide open spaces
by: Anonymous

I kinda have a fear of wide open spaces. To me, age kinda relates to that, as there is a wide space between me and a very old two hundered year piece of furnature. The oldest thing I saw was a bible manuscript that was about 10 thousand years old, I was intriged while I was looking at it but scared at the same time. My greatest fear would probably be if I were out in outer space without a space suit. Not cause it would kill me but because I would be in a place that is so wide open and in a sense very very old...
