No Butter!
by: Anonymous

I'm 33 and can't remember when exactly during my childhood my butter phobia began.. However, it actually interferes with my life to a pretty serious degree. It definitely should have a scientific phobia name, and is something that should be studied. Has anyone gone to a psychologist on this one?

When i was 5yrs i licked clean the mixing bowl mum had used to make a cake. A few mins later i was sick. Since then i cant touch butter, be near it or have it in food. I cant buy it. So none of the family have it. Im 50yrs amd even eating out is a nightmare for me and my family.

I have the same phobia...can't look at the stuff, can't touch even a washed container, can't eat if is on the table and freak out if it touches me. Even feel uncomfortable saying or writing the word an usually refer to it as ' the stuff you put on toast'....bizarre!!

My 5 year-old son--same thing!

My 5 year-old son just discovered I secretly use butter to make his beloved cinnamon toast. He is freaking out, always does when butter is on the table near his food too. We think we narrowed it down to the cause: When he was 3, he saw a movie his older sisters were watching that scared him. At that time, he was eating buttered popcorn. Sounds silly, but we have no other connection to make except this, and it happened immediately afterwards. Worse yet, it extends to the color yellow, where some yellow things he comes in contact with "scares" him (his words). This includes cheese, especially parmesan. Interestingly enough, he doesn't consider pancakes, pasta, nor pizza (his favorite foods) something yellow. Sometimes I question if it is an attention-seeking measure (he gets a TON of attention, being the youngest of four children and the only boy). He looked frozen solid one day when his friend asked for parmesan for his lunch and placed it next to my son... but my son did not say a word, just sat still. So it seems like he can control his outbursts. As for the cinnamon toast, he came out of his room where I sent him to calm down, microwaved his toast, and is now eating it. So there is hope, I hope, that he can control the level of aversion he has with butter or other yellow food items. I just reassured him that I would never give him anything that would hurt him, adding he can't have too much butter because it's like sugar or candy. I think talking about it in a matter-of-fact way helps. As for the experiences from adults on this thread, I hope that it gets easier for you with time....

I've had my butter phobia since I was 5 years old, I'm now 31!! I can't go near it without breaking out into a cold sweat!I can't even touch an old butter tub that has been thoroughly washed and has got something else stored in it. If I happen to touch something that has been near butter, I need to scrub my hands and even after all the scrubbing, I still feel coated in it!!

If it is just butter and nothing else, listen to this. I'm a grown man and I can't stand the following:
1. Don't drink milk and avoid looking at it (not lactose intollerant),
I eat other dairy products.

2. Can't stand cereal. I found this website because I just saw an ad for General Mills cereals where I was originally browsing so I looked for a site to offset my disgust.

3. Won't eat other products if distributed by Kelloggs or General Mills, etc.

4. Won't eat certain processed foods( too gross) like: cake-mixes,
Rice -a Roni, Stove-Top,

5. Certain "outdated brands" like Lipton Tea, Mueller's Pasta, Peter Pan Peanut Butter, Uncle Ben's Rice, because there are "much more authentic" versions of such products these days.

A bit more complicated. Isn't it?

i have this too.

Actually, i am just like your little brother. The one time my home ec. teacher put butter on my fingers to make little rice crispie balls, and i flipped out! i wiped it on the person beside me, and then i puked.
