Akousticophobia, fear of specific sounds

by Katie
(New Jersey)

Akousticophobia, fear of specific sounds. I cannot STAND the sound of a fork squeaking against a plate. I know that most people find this sound a bit irritating, but I just flip out whenever I hear it. I'll do involuntary spastic movements, my eyelids will flutter, and I'll likely gasp loudly. My family has been getting upset with me for this, since in their opinion, the sound is not a big deal, but it is for me!! I can't help it that I freak out when I hear this sound! My heart starts racing and I feel physically sick, it's terrible, but there's no way I could be exposed to this sound in therapy or anything... I'd rather die (hyperbolically, of course).
